Qiongzhong occupies the centre of Hainan and is the county most fully inside the ecological conservation area and the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. It is the source area for several of the island's principal rivers, which is a large part of why it is protected.
Its economy is agriculture — rubber, betel nut, tropical fruit and green tea — and nature tourism. There is no designated Free Trade Port key park and no industrial programme, and the protection regime means there will not be one.
