Chengmai lies immediately west of Haikou and functions in practice as part of the capital's economic area — it is one of the four divisions in the 海澄文定 integrated circle. Old Town (老城) in the county's north-east is a substantial industrial and technology development area.
The Hainan Ecological Software Park, one of the Free Trade Port's designated key parks, is located here. It is the island's principal cluster for software, digital economy and information-services businesses, and has drawn a disproportionate share of Hainan's registered technology companies.
The county's economy also includes logistics — its position between Haikou and the western industrial belt puts it on the island's principal freight corridor — and tropical agriculture inland.
