Dongfang sits on Hainan's west coast facing the Beibu Gulf, and is the island's second industrial centre after Yangpu. Basuo Port handles bulk cargo, and the city hosts the Dongfang Lingang Industrial Park, coordinated with Yangpu.
Its forward programme is energy. The province's 2026 investment list gives Dongfang one of the larger project counts on the island, with an offshore wind and hydrogen integration project among the headline items — reflecting the offshore wind resource in the waters off the western coast.
Dongfang is also the western terminus of much of Hainan's gas infrastructure, which is what makes the hydrogen and chemical proposition credible rather than aspirational.
